gawkのメンテナ Aharon (Arnord) Robbins氏がcomp.lang.awkで
以下のような発言をしていました。

jindexやjlengthを作らなくて良かったようです(笑)
これまでの仕様とどうすり合わせるのか興味をひかれる部分もありますね。
完全に置き換えてしまうんでしょうか。
